Military History

Group Co-ordinator: Martha Wooldridge martha@u3a-llandrindod.org.uk

This group meets on the fourth Tuesday morning of each month at 10.30 a.m. Meetings are usually held at the group leader's house in Llandrindod Wells.

The aim of the group is to study anything that interests the members in the area of military history. We can be as deep or as superficial as we like as long as we hold people's interest.

The Group Leader (a graduate historian) carries out much of the research and presentation but other members are welcome to contribute to the subjects that interest them.

Topics for 2018

We are currently in the middle of the history of the British Army from its inception in the latter half of the seventeenth century and have reached the early "colonial" wars such as the dismal retreat from Kabul in Afghanistan. We will look at the Army reforms of the 1870s and the attempts to base the Army ranks on merit rather than class. We will look at the Boer war and then have to take the big decision whether or not to move on to aspects of the First World War or to move to another area of war altogether.
